Who Was She?

Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 in Steventon, a tiny British village that doubtless helped to inspire the quaint, evocative settings in her many novels. Though she never married herself, Jane created some of the most enduring love stories of all time, as well as some of the most enigmatic and original female characters ever.
Very little is known of her personal life but she was close to her family, particularly her sister, Cassandra. Jane’s characters are modern and fresh, even now, and she remains the favorite of romantics, feminists and lit majors alike.

Girls’ Night Out

Dressy enough for a wedding but sassy enough for a night out, this outfit is inspired by the romantic fashions of Jane’s day. A cream strapless dress with an empire waist is a modern update on the classic Georgian gown. Mint green lace booties are sweet and edgy, while a rosy gold locket necklace finishes off the look.

Madeira wine was the favorite ladies’ drink in Jane’s era. Sip an aged Spanish vintage and toast to the happiness of every girl who’s ever cheered on Lizzie.

Happy 239th Birthday, Jane!
